John Houston

John Houston is an award-winning Documentary Director originally from Baffin Island, Nunavut.  He now lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but remains fluent in Inuktitut, and his storytelling is deeply influenced by having been brought up between Inuit and Qallunaat (Settler) cultures.  His eight films to date include NULIAJUK: MOTHER OF THE SEA BEASTS (nominated for an International Emmy Award and winner of the DGC Alan King Award) and currently ATAUTSIKUT/LEAVING NONE BEHIND.  Project interests include the Indigenous oral tradition, self empowerment, and social justice.  John also directed 2nd Unit on the feature film THE SNOW WALKER. Winner of the 2012 Don Haldane Distinguished Service Award, in recognition of outstanding service to the membership of the Directors Guild of Canada.
