Sean Horlor is a Canadian LGBTQIA+ director known for visually stunning and emotionally raw storytelling that showcases the lives and experiences of real people. He is part of a co-directing team with Steve J. Adams.
Sean's latest feature film SATAN WANTS YOU was one of the buzziest and most talked about titles at SXSW 2023—with Variety praising the documentary as “the year’s scariest documentary" and critics awarding the film with a 96% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It won Best Documentary at Fantasia International Film Festival 2023, Best Canadian Documentary at the 2024 Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards, and the Rogers Prize for Excellence at the 2024 Rockie Awards.
His debut feature documentary SOMEONE LIKE ME was an emotional journey through the immigration sponsorship process in Canada. Following ten strangers over a year as they supported the resettlement of a queer refugee from Uganda, the film offered an intimate, insightful portrait of humanity and won international acclaim, including the esteemed Roger’s Audience Award at Toronto’s Hot Docs in 2021.
His short films also include the award-winning THE DAY DON DIED (Hot Docs 2019, Palm Springs Shortfest 2019), as well as BRUNCH QUEEN (Inside Out 2018) and A SMALL PART OF ME (BFI Flare 2017). He is an active member of the Director’s Guild of Canada.
He’s also the author of MADE BEAUTIFUL BY USE as well as the co-creator and former host of the lifestyle reality series DON'T QUIT YOUR GAY JOB, a lifestyle comedy reality series produced by OUTtv. His path to feature filmmaking began after appearing on OUTtv’s Hot Pink Shorts documentary series in 2012. He also worked for a number of years as a creative non-fiction writer, publishing everything from travel essays to celebrity gossip. His writing has appeared in major newspapers across Canada, as well as indieWIRE, Attitude Magazine, Outlooks Magazine, and Daily Xtra.
