Winnifred Jong

Winnifred Jong is an award winning Toronto-based filmmaker. Known for her cinematic style and emotionally authentic storytelling, Winnifred is adept at directing drama, comedy and action. Since being named one of Playback’s 5-to-Watch in 2018 she has gone on to be nominated for 6 Canadian Screen Awards (twice for directing PRETTY HARD CASES) and winning twice for directing her bold satirical comedy TOKENS, which she created as part of the Women In the Director’s Chair prestigious Story & Leadership Program. She won a 2020 Directors’ Guild of Canada Award for her work on Hallmark’s MYSTERY 101: DEAD TALK and another in 2024 Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Family Series for her work on the AppleTV+ series, JANE. She was recognized with the 2020 ACTRA Sandi Ross Award and the 2023 Reelworld Trailblazer Award for her advocacy and leadership.

She burst into the US television market as the producing-director on OWN’s THE KINGS OF NAPA which premiered in January 2022. Her work can be seen on Apple+, Netflix, Max, Hulu, CW, OWN, CBC, CityTV, CTV and Global including the recent MY LIFE WITH THE WALTER BOYS, WILD CARDS, LAW & ORDER TORONTO: CRIMINAL INTENT and the upcoming new show, SAINT-PIERRE. Selected for the inaugural BANFF Spark Accelerator, Winnifred has twice attended as a participant of the Netflix-BANFF Diversity of Voices Program.

Winnifred may have once snuck into the Cannes Film Festival through a side door, but she's determined to return by way of the Palais steps.
